In an interview with ELEKTRONIKPRAXIS, Matthias Lange, General Manager Connectivity, Texas Instruments, explains the background to MIOTY, the new radio protocol for massive IoT applications.

“What we have seen as evolution in the past couple of years in IoT is a tremendous technology development, probably the fastest we’ve seen in history of time. One of the key things here has been is the ability to get data access. The underlying thing for data access is connectivity. What standards bring to the connectivity is to basically democratize the availability, ensuring that everybody can develop their own applications based on top of some technology that is existing already today. Standards are important because it enables multiple companies to build products in an ecosystem that work well together for an IoT application. You need to have connectivity. You need to have endnote applications. You need to have security, cloud and so on. The standard is the fabric that ties these things together. MIOTY is founded by Texas Instruments, Fraunhofer, Diehl and a few other companies. It’s very important that we come together as a range of companies that provide different aspects. We have semiconductor. We have Fraunhofer as a technology provider. We have Diehl as a meter company. And we need all of these different components to actually build an effective communication system. So this standard comprising of all of these different types of companies will actually help to ensure that we have solid end to end solutions. The standard governing body ensures that you have interoperability because without interoperability you cannot build this type of robust systems. One of the basic principles of the MIOTY standard is robust communication, and the standard body will ensure to guarantee that we have the kind of quality in the networks.

MIOTY is a low power wide area network wireless protocol. It is using the sub-1 GHz band and it’s got unparalleled robustness range and low power. It is used for smart grid applications, smart city applications and other types of long applications where we need long range wireless network connectivity.
